TPM, six sigma, kaizen or total Productive management has become a way of life in most of the best manufacturing plants of the world. Initially plant and machinery maintenance was considered as something that was time consuming and would involve a lot of expenditure. The maintenance of the plant used to be the sole responsibility of the maintenance department.

With the introduction of TPM and better understanding of the budgeting with the aid of better and scientific costing maintenance has been taken as an integral function of Production. The need for TPM was felt to avoid wastage of the raw and finished material with the changing economic conditions. TPM was seen as a technique and way to reduce the cost of production by increasing the optimum use of the resources at hand.

Another feature of TPM that has attracted all manufacturing companies towards itself was the capability of producing a low batch quantity in the shortest possible time. Customer satisfaction is a core area that was touched by TPM and delivery of non defective goods is a primary function in TPM. With such features and a promising path ahead TPM was embraced and practiced by one and all for increased revenue generation.
Sometimes TPM and TQM are confused and thought to be same but the reality is that these are two different concepts with different ideologies. There are some similarities which make TPM and TQM look alike. Both TPM and TQM require total commitment and involvement in the functioning and implementation from the top management. Involvement of the employees has to be to the core and they have to be empowered to initiate corrective action.

A strong vision has to be in place from the management which has to be shared and followed by each and everyone in the organization. The employees have to be ever ready to embrace any kind of change that comes their way. One has to be very specific about the end results as much time and resources have to be devoted to achieve desired results over a stretch of time.
